Clear Light, smooth
Sled ride from Crestline to Marshall. Stayed above Lower Marshall launch for a good little while, using light ridge lift above west side. Several gliders in vicinity made it interesting. Overshot target by about 25 yards. Tried (again) to "pull in a little" after flaring - blew what would have been a good landing. Downtube replacement $22.00. Must practice landings at the "secret hill" (Belmont) before flying from high altitude again. Trying to "pull in a little" after flaring seems to have become an ingrained habit.

Hazy Strong and smooth
Debi said I could go up to Crestline on my own and launch. The sun had just set so my plan was to fly directly to Lower Marshall, work any lift there for a few minutes, then land at Pinecrest airpark. Did two opposing 360's halfway out to Marshall (for spectators). Flew down west finger and found some lift. Went over power plant and out front. Large windsock was not there and I could not make out the smaller one. Did not know I was flying downwind so I overshot the LZ by at least 100 yds. but landed well in a plowed lane in the field at 6:45 pm.

Scattered cumulus from desert Light wind, smooth
Last lesson. Purchased Lite Dream 185 from Debbie. Went to Crestline, but wind was blowing down (from desert, pre-Santa Anas) so we went to Upper Marshall Peak. Setup and launched cleanly. Found no lift and let myself get too low before heading to landing area. Was a few hundred feet above the "big house with the pool", just under 1 mile from landing area, when I had to decide whether to land or go for the Park. I decided to go for the Park. About half-way there I began to doubt that I would reach the landing area. Missed power lines by no more than 10', stayed prone and skimmed over barbed wire fence and rocks, landed on little (4') path next to dike. My instructor said I had to write sentences as punishment. She threatened to beat me with my nose rib. 1. I will not let myself get too low. 2. I will not let myself get too low. 3. I will not let myself get too low (repeated 97 more times). Obtained Novice rating (Hang 2). Completed FSL.

Clr w/lt cirrus Smooth, minor turb.
First launch from Crestline! Basically a poor day. Shifty winds on the bottom and up top - very little vertical movement - dry post-Santa-Ana-Winds. 21 percent humidity, 90's below, 70's at Crestline. Flew out a little too far from the ridge lift zone at launch - was somewhat leery of the nearby ridges and homes, so I stayed a little too far out. After a couple of turns and course corrections Debbie had me fly out to Lower Marshall (RGNLS) to work the lift there. Flew off to directly over the launch point on Lower Marshall. Lost about 1500' along the way. Concentrated on finding and reading the lift off the fingers and the glassy lane up the west ridge. Came in for my approach a little high, pulled-in and came down fast on final approach, straight into the wind and steady - flared hard, but pulled in.

Scattered Strong, smooth lift
We couldn't use the Palm hill today, so Debi decided we could launch today from Lower Marshall Peak(!) (RGNLS). I knew that I was ready. Launched cleanly at 16:40 and immediately caught lift and got very high. Debi had me do some 360's and figure 8's then told me to play for a while (she had other students in the air). Smooth maneuvers required smooth, gentle control. Flew all over, did some sets of triple and double 360s. Sun went behind Baldy and I lost altitude rapidly. Made a smooth approach, let airspeed get very low. Landed (poorly) at least 30 yards from target, but IN landing area. felt calm, happy, and secure in the air.

Clear Steady, light winds
Good day! 4 flights from 100' - good turns good landings -> dropped 'em right in. Key to good landing is maintaining speed. Moved up to 200' and launched 3 times.

Clear Steady, light winds
Plan - Turn left and go over 100' launch area then right, left and into wind and land. Execution - Straight out, faded left, turned right, passed over tire, landed at least 50 yards from target.

Perfect! Right near tire.

Good. Debi said I "looked like a pro". Amateur photographer Robert B. Parker stopped and took some pictures. Can't wait to see them.

Clear Thermals, light gusts
Very poor wind - only 2 flights in many hours of waiting. Good launches. * Labor Day Weekend - Andrew Jackson, founder of Pine Crest Air Park, died after 3 year bout with cancer.

Clear w/ smog Light
Very steep hill. This is flying! 7 flights. One launch from 75', the rest from 100'. Started planned turning (right, then left, then land) - good control. Landings still too low. Landed once 12' from target, 2 more within 30'. Caught lift on 2 launches, very high.

Clear Med gusts warm
Emphasis on smooth landings. 20 flights. Mostly good, stable flights / landings. Avoided hitting trees by flying over the first one then flaring and dropping to the ground in front of next. Directional control good - had to make some serious turns to avoid crashing. Am advancing to larger hill tomorrow morning.

Hazy Strong sets, steady dir.
Very good wind, shifty at times. 16 flights, good progress, landings much better, holding flare. Launched at my discretion. Applied for USHGA membership and Hang 1 (Beginner) classification. Signed form at Airpark.

Smog Very light gusts
Poor wind, mostly SE, from direction of trees and cactus patch. Made only about 6 flights in 4 hours on the hill. All flights were 'good' with some minor hitches. Debi says airspeed still somewhat slow, and I am pulling in and pushing out a bit too much. All good launches and mostly good landings with two or three really good flares. Must zoom in low and flare quick and HOLD. Lesson in patience, wind observation.

Clear Strong, later light
Practiced light wind launches (15-20) many good flights. Some trouble with nose angle after launch - (corrected towards the end of the day). Flew straight, good control. Launches mostly good though I tended to "hop" on take-off. Let ME decide when to Launch. Debi says next lesson at bigger hill.

Clear Strong
W 20 clear, strong. Several good flights - good landings. Trouble keeping nose down immediately after liftoff (loss of airspeed). Kept most straight. Some good flares on landing. 5-hour lesson.

First hang gliding lesson. 5 flights (launches?). Totally cool. Airspeed critical. Instructor Debbie Renshaw. (Pepper Street in Colton, CA at 1000' MSL, a 25-foot west-facing sand dune that catches the afternoon flow head-on. Beloved by a generation of Inland pilots.)
