1988-12-03 Sat EDW ORT 11:00 0.2 Super Sport 180 HG fun
20% (high clouds) Smooth
First flight at Elsinore and demo with Sport 180. Blowing up at launch, down in LZ. Good launch, worked light lift a little, wary of hills and sink. Uphill landing with a bad whack, bent right down tube by dropping it in too fast, I guess. Light handling otherwise. 10 minutes airtime. Bought Litek vario from Debi (w/hiking altimeter (analog) attached).
Replace bent right down tube.

0% Strong with thermals
Good launch at 1:20 PM with immediate lift. Got very high, saw Silverwood far above launch (+1500?). Worked thermals on the ridge and back. Desert looked reachable. No instruments. Sank and saved twice at the billboard before a small (?) inversion layer came in and thermals died. Two-step landing at 2:43 PM.

0% Occasional thermals
Good launch into light lift at 4:37 PM. Stayed even with the ridge for 10 to 12 minutes, then headed to Lower Marshall. Scratched a bit there. Rushed landing because another pilot was dropping in fast. Overshot by 100 yards. Good landing at 5:12 PM.

0% with smog Little or no lift at Crestline
First flight after overhaul and inspection. Not a great launch at 4:35 PM; bar was way out in front of me. I looked up and saw my main strap was too long, and I was hanging on the safety strap behind the king post. Therefore, I had to pull in during the whole flight. Still, quite a flight. Scratched at Lower Marshall and got halfway down before catching a big thermal, gaining 1,000 feet easily. Went to UM and back. LC thermals over the Elves, then nothing. Ultra-soft nose-in landing 15 feet from the target at 5:40 PM.
Adjust main strap length.

1988-06-15 Wed CRS Pinecrest 12:20 0.3 Super Dream 185 HG fun
10% Light turbulence
Good launch at 12:20 PM. No lift or decent thermals to work. Scratched at Lower Marshall for a while. Overshot LZ a little. Landed at 12:40 PM. Left Lt Dream w/Debby for inspection (13 June 88)
None

1988-06-15 Wed CRS Pinecrest 15:20 2.3 Super Dream 185 HG fun
Smoggy inversion Bumpy
Excellent launch at 3:20 PM. Went to Pine Flats. Up and down there many times. Some good wingovers on the way to the LZ. Good landing at 5:40 PM, short of target. Left Light Dream with Debbie for inspection [8-13].

0-10% Turbulent, big thermals
Good quick launch @ 2:31 PM. Soared easily for two-plus hours on ridge, mostly at billboard. -> Caught some strong thermals. Got high enough to see all of Lake Gregory and Silverwood. Heavy traffic because of Flyathon 88. Made it to Pine Flats (across Devil Canyon). First time there. Turbulent at LZ. Great landing @ 5:57 PM. Made $1.55 per minute sponsorship.

1988-06-08 Wed UM Pinecrest 17:15 1.3 Super Dream 185 HG fun
10% Smooth with thermals
Good launch at 5:15 PM. Super Dream handling very differently from Light Dream, more effort required to initiate turns (fast ones). Soared very well, got real high over Paivika in thermals. Up and down below ridge several times. Long time at Lower Marshall. Decent landing, just past tire at 6:30 PM. Must try Super Dream again with weight farther forward on keel.
Picked up glider (no inspection done).

1988-06-02 Thu UM Pinecrest 17:11 1.1 LT DRM KLH 185 19851 HG fun
10% Steady with large thermals
Almost blew launch. Did hang check at setup, not on launch -> One harness strap in front of left arm -> Nose went up as I freed strap. Could have stalled in weaker conditions. Launch at 5:11 PM. Good thermals on billboard side. Got high. Three excellent windovers over canyon. Saw a doe and two fawns on LM. Good landing at 6:18 PM.
Left glider for inspection / overhaul with Debbie Renshaw.

20% on horizon Smooth, Type Thermals
Long launch at 6:12 PM, no lift, slow cruise to Lower Marshall. Scratched there 6 to 8 minutes. Good no-step landing at 6:32 PM.

1988-05-22 Sun CRS Pinecrest 16:23 1.5 LT DRM KLH 185 19851 HG fun
70% high cumulus Strong laminar with thermals
Long launch at 4:23 PM, immediate lift, crowded, 10 gliders minimum. Hung out on billboard side, had fun. At one point was at west end watching gliders to left, heard yell from right. Glider with seated pilot was less than 500 feet away and at my level—must look around constantly. Headed out after an hour 10. Did semi-lengths near Marshall, was going in at same time as another glider. I started to drop in, so I'm sinking fast and going to the standard downwind-upwind approach, knee figure eights. Dropped back, let him land, went in after. Good landing at 5:50 PM, running. He said no problem with timing.

1988-05-18 Wed UM Pinecrest 15:58 0.3 LT DRM KLH 185 19851 HG fun
Clear with light smog Tiny thermals
Good launch at 3:58 PM. Went left, sank slowly -> Small thermals, in and out of them, below ridge. Scratched hard till 500 feet below launch. Headed for LZ. Some bumps, small thermals. Too iffy to try working. Got one over hills on the west side of power plant. Barely. Landed well past tire at 4:18 PM. Cleared just a hair early. Pulled in a bit and pushed out hard. Stand-up, two-step landing. Many other pilots, all seemed to come in at once -> 4:30 to 5:30 PM. [I] Made figure-8 approaches just behind (100') of edge of LZ -> eliminated landing short problem. No wind both landings.

Overcast, ceiling approximately 4,800 feet Small bumps
Good launch at 3:12 PM. -> 200 to 500 foot per minute sink in front. Went straight for the LZ mostly, scratched once or twice -> nothing steady. Finally, a good landing in middle of the LZ 30 to 40 feet from the tire at 3:24 -> Made small 8's above the edge of the field.

40% (a front coming) steady, smooth thermals
Way too strong at Crestline (25-35). Greg DeWolf said I shouldn't fly there. He flew tandem. Nice at UM. Immediate gain at 400+. Worked on smooth control while working thermals. Caught some good ones. Studied feel of them. Got low behind Western Ridge and had to surf rotor about 50 feet off ground. Intense, but good practice. Misjudged gradient and landed short again at 7:03. It looked like I got level with Crestline, approximately at 1200 altitude gain from Marshall. Saw a brown bear on the road [from the air] at UM; looked like a big dog running in front of the truck. Told by Stan, who flies a Pink Vision 4, that the windtalker is about eight mph off. Must be low. See McKenzie.
