Josh Winstead

Launched 2:50 into a strong cycle - almost zero groundspeed after two steps and elevatored up a few hundred feet. Rowdy, tight thermals at Billboard; took one to 5150 MSL, but was shortly below the ridge again. Quite soarable at Marshall vicinity, got to 5200 above Marshall Peak briefly. Student wanted to land after an hour so he could go up and fly a PG. Lots of lift near the LZ, but found a big sink hole SW of the LZ and went in for a standard SW approach into 10-15 MPH wind. Josh, P2 pilot, did well after flying the glider across to Marshall.
Great!

We few, we happy few! I want to thank Randy and Tim and Allen and Stan and Gwen and Rod (and Mike, who turned around for Elsinore in Riverside) for giving in to the NW flow and bailing from the LZ by 1:40. You guys (and gal) are really big-hearted to sacrifice like that. Hoffbrow and I were lamenting that we'd each go home and have ho-hum afternoons when a Romanian PG pilot named Alex and his friend Irena (sp ?) showed up. He'd never flown here so we were giving him the rundown on the site. Then Mark (PG) showed up and we realized that it had been steady SW for at least 10 minutes. After a few more minutes the windtalker confirmed that the N at Crestline was down to gusts of 12 from 17. Mark and I raced to my place to get my Falcon, since I was counting on Mike to bring me something to fly. We got to Crestline at 2:45 and it was puffing in steadily, so we set up as fast as we could. Mark launched in a great cycle, and I had to wait 5 minutes more for another one, launching at 3:10. At 3:20 I was at 11,500 and a Southwest Airlines jet passed at eye level. Three minutes later I was at 13,300 and freezing in just a polo shirt and light driving gloves, more or less directly above launch. Hoffman was neaby about a thousand feet lower. I pointed the 225 for Glen Helen, looking right often for more airliners. Got over Lytle Creek Wash, just West of I-15 at 10K, and worked some lift there, eyeing Cuc the whole time. I pushed West a mile or so, but wasn't gaining, so went back over the wash and climbed again. The wind was cimng from many directions, it seemed, and the haze was all along the front of the San Gabriels. I spotted Hoffman above and behind me, which was comforting and really cool, since he's famous for bailing halfway between Billboard and Pine! Got back to 10K and pushed West again. This time I headed for the wide spot on the E-W ridge, thinking there might be N flow on the right and SW on the left. When I got there, about a mile past a line straight North from the chicke ranch, I hit big big sink, losing 3,000 feet in a few minutes. Got back above the I-15 turnoff for Lytle Creek at 6,300, feeling low, definitely needing lift to make it to the LZ. A few big circles led me to light lift that solidifed and took me back above 10K again. I headed NW, above the ridge line that heads up the pass parallel to the I-15. There was convergence lift for a couple of miles, and I pondered going way into the pass and hopping to Cuc Peak from there, but found sink again so did a 180 and found the shear again. Climbed to 7,300 or so and hopped NE for the hills above Devore. I arrived at the foothills at about 5,200 and pointed a little more West due to extended sink, but found a small weak one going up the face of Sugarpine. At the ridgetop it turned on and went straight up to 8K. I pointed to Crestline and gained 2,000 (without turning) by the time I got to Billboard. There was a huge crowd at Crestline, and I had thought that maybe, just maybe, it would be top-landable there. The haze was almost to Crestline, and it was clearly too windy to land there (never done it, BTW). I had to stuff the bar to get down near the ridge, and when I though I was close I looked at my vario and found I wast at 6,200 MSL still! PGs were launching and Crash was flying an RC plane. I stuffed some more, but only 'buzzed' launch at 150' AGL, because it was turbulent as heck. I was ready to land, so I pointed at the LZ. I drifted East pretty fast, so I pointed at the Reservoir. I was still headed for Marshall Peak in a sever crab, so I concentrated on arriving above Cloud Peak (didn't want to be downwind of the LZ). At cloud I was still at about 4,500, so I unzipped my harness, went upright, and put my feet on the basetube so I could go for an extended dive. At first is was flying hands off, but hit enough bumps that I started holding the downtubes before long. It was going up everywhere, an there were PGs parked facing West several thousand feet above the LZ. I did a small approach right over the LZ, turning to final at about 200' AGL and still landed about 30 feet from the Eastern edge. What an awesome 2:15 of airtime! Spending so much time over Lytle Creek was a real treat - I've been to Cuc and back once, years ago, and have gone from Devore to Glen Helen and quickly back East many times, but have never just hung out over that area and worked it. Almost like flying a new site! Alex the Romanian flew from Marshall and had fun. He'll be joining the club (and USHGA) next week. I told him there were only a few days like this each year. Hoffman was jazzed when he landed the U2 160. I hadn't seen him for at least an hour. Megret did a great approach, but she came in over the PG spot directly downwind of the shade structure in strong West wind. She got rolled and popped and ended up with bloody knees (and a grin). Her technique was great, and her corrective efforts as well, but getting downwind of the box is rarely pleasant. I guess at least one PG from Crestline landed between there and Marshall somewhere. I'm glad I have to go to work tomorrow - if I flew, it would have to be a let down after yesterday and today. (Thanks again too the wusses who bailed ;)

No point trying to describe how great it was. I launched at 11:55 and declined the thermal directly in front of launch. I was soon below launch and headed toward Marshall. Four-fifths of the way there I got a nice core and drifted with it to Crestline, climbing back to 5400. At the ridge I found a boomer that went straight up and was above 8000 MSL about 15 minutes after launching. I spent most of the next two hours above 8 grand. Went a little East of Rim High, then West out to Devore. I got to 11,200 MSL West of Sugarpine, with Hoffbrow about 300 feet above me. Stan and he and someone else went further West into the pass. I hopped across out to over Lytle Creek, with visions of Cuc in my head. My neck had been tightening up for about 40 minutes, and at 9,500 I hadn't found lift for a while, so I decided to drift to the LZ and land, preserving myself for flying today (Sunday). Had to find sink to get down. There was a nice 12-15 WSW breeze in the LZ, making landing easy for everyone.Big grins all around in the LZ. Today should be good, but probably not quite as good. I think it will turn within the next couple of hours.
Slight left turn. Un-twisted L tip 1 up. Launch 11:55

Good launch in basically no wind - had to run >12 steps. Pat flew with me several years ago. I gave him the controls early and let him fly across the canyon. Only one or two bumps at Regionals. Was not quite into the wind (switchy) on landing, and trim was a little slow (only 3/4 inch ahead of default hang pos.) so was dropping right tip a little and mushing. Flared hard and we slowly went to our knees as I put the bar on the ground with a slight thud.
Glider had a couple of strings that were not trimmed and hot-knifed. Did not have correct middle keel protector, and had 2 bullet holes at the top of the Right LE at the #6 batten pocket - non-issue.
